Summary of Standardized Test Performance

As indicated by the data that has been provided, Sankofa Freedom Academy has continued to make strides toward achieving its goals of increasing proficiency levels for our children and improving their academic outcomes.  Certainly we are not where we want to be, but we are encouraged by the progress that is being made by our students.

Since its inception, Sankofa Freedom Academy has continued to make strides toward achieving AYP.   We have continued to make progress each year in the area of mathematics. In both 2013 and 2014, approximately 60% of our students from grades 3-8 tested proficient in mathematics (2013 – 60.1% and 2014 - 59.5%). Certainly our literacy results in k-8 have been more sluggish, however we are making slow progress and we have moved from a literacy proficiency of 39% to a literacy rate of 42.3%.

Again, while these scores are not where we want them to be, we are proud of the progress our school is making especially when viewed in context with neighboring schools and with the School district of Philadelphia.  In a comparative analysis of Sankofa Freedom Academy School performance to the School District of Philadelphia, in both literacy and mathematics, SFACS student proficiency rates exceed that of the School District.  Especially noteworthy is an examination of African American students in the District and African American students at Sankofa Freedom Academy.  In Math, 61% of our African American students scored proficient as compared to 36% in the School District of Philadelphia.   Similarly, 45% of our African American students tested proficient in reading as compared to 37% in the District.  The indicator that we have watched most closely has been our PVAAS scores because they indicate the growth of our students rather than comparing groups of students to one another.  In 2013 and 2014 our students met or exceeded state growth expectations in reading and math for all grades tested. Overall, our school was given a blended SPP of 60.6 in 2013 and 60.0 in 2014, which indicated that we are making slow but steady progress toward our goals.
