 Mission and Vision

Sankofa Freedom Academy is a college preparatory K-12 freedom school that will build on the Philadelphia Freedom Schools model to increase literacy and numeracy levels throughout the community, promote respect for scholarship, servant leadership, conflict resolution, and cultural democracy. Through the use of African Centered and culturally responsive methodologies, Sankofa Freedom Academy will engender in its students, staff, and community a love for learning, pride in heritage and a commitment to personal and societal transformation. By operationalizing the adage, “each one / teach one”, Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School will build intergenerational learning communities in which each and every person is responsible to learn in order to teach, and teach in order to build a better world.

Title I Parent Notification

Greetings Parent/Guardian, Sankofa receives Title I funding and is included under the regulations of the “No Child Left Behind Act” (NCLB) that was signed into law by President Bush on January 8, 2002. NCLB is designed to improve student achievement by increasing federal involvement in public education both at the state and local level. NCLB requires significant changes to schools that receive Title I funding. To see the details, please click here.

Peace & Blessings from Dr. Mama:

Tell Them We Are Rising!

There are definite signs that spring is actually coming. As we hit the mid-point of the third report card we do so excited about the progress that your children are making and confident about the challenges that await us. We have recently received our Keystone results back from our winter wave of testing and feel encouraged by the progress that our children have already made. We have surpassed our literature score from last year and have nearly 60% of our students proficient in literature. To provide incentive for our children to apply themselves more we are offering incentives for our 11th grade students that include all expenses covered to the HBCU tour as well as senior prom tickets for next year and free year book. Our students are excited that we recognize that being under this kind of pressure to past standardized test is not easy and we appreciate their efforts. We also hope that our 3-8 grade parents are getting their students ready for the upcoming PSSA in April. Our students should be reading, writing, and practicing their math each day as we move closer and closer to the test.

While we are very committed to our children doing well, we want to remind you that your children are not simply there test scores. They are beautiful, bright, eager scholars who are growing into young people who care about their families, communities, and the world. We see it in their science projects. We witness it in the oratorical contest. We celebrate it as they slay in the Black History Bowl. We marvel at their service to the world as we read the journals of our ambassadors to Jamaica, West Indies and Gambia, West Africa. We recognize them as heroes, keepers of Maat, servant leaders, and freedom fighters. We hope that you will continue to encourage your children to do their best as we approach our testing session. Help your children to set goals to grow from wherever they are to the next level. Most of all give them a big hug and let them know that you know they have the genius of their ancestors and we all love them very much! Happy Spring, family!
