Parents, Guardians and Students,

                I am truly excited and look forward to having a great year as a math teacher at Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School and for the new opportunities that it will bring.  I have 8 years teaching experience within various school settings of which I have had the pleasure of teaching mathematics to fifth through eighth grade scholars.  My goal every year is teach scholars to build a foundation for success which will integrate into high school, post-secondary school and life.

                I believe that communication is very important for the success of our scholars.  I want to build a strong teacher, student, and parent/guardian relationship through communication.   The success of our scholars depends on it.    Let’s plan to keep the lines of communication open.   I will be using a communication program called REMIND that you can access through your phone and/or through the internet. In addition to a rigorous curriculum we will focus on our vocabulary development in math as well as writing.  We will implement Cornell Note-taking to help connect our classroom with home.  Cornell notes provide a framework for taking notes as well as a way to summarize learning.  I want our students to leave with a greater depth of understanding and application of knowledge. 

Course Description

   In Grade 5, instructional time will focus on these critical areas:

1. Number and Operations in Base 10

Understand the place value system

Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths

2. Number and Operations (Fractions)

Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide       fractions.

3. Geometry
Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems

Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems

Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties

4. Measurement and Data

Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system

Represent and interpret data

Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition

5. Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Write and interpret Numerical Expressions
Analyze patterns and relationships
