Sister Crystal Jones

Sister Crystal Jones is a Maryland born teacher, writer, poet, and artist. She has a passion for literature, history, art, gender studies, and human rights for all people. Sister Crystal attended Lincoln University (PA) for undergraduate studies where she was a double-major in English and Secondary Education. After student teaching in the city, she remained in Philadelphia to begin her teaching career at Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School in 2009 as a founding staff member. She has over 10 years of experience with grades 7-12 in various educational and writing programs and schools including Temple’s Upward Bound Program, Steppingstones Scholars, Inc., and Philadelphia Freedom Schools. She is a creative, passionate, and unique teacher that loves to analyze literature and help students see various perspectives in a text. She believes history is essential to our understanding of the world around us, and integrates socio-historical elements into her lessons. Sister Crystal has taken graduate course work in the areas of reading, writing, and literacy, and English Language Learner instruction; these courses have helped her to remain up to speed with research-based, best practices in English language arts instruction. She is currently working on completing her master’s degree at Arcadia University, and hopes to move into education leadership in the near future. She is the mother of three small children, and an avid runner and yoga practitioner. Sister Crystal is excited to return to Sankofa to engage the 11th and 12th grade students in a rigorous and engaging curriculum.
